It's
tough out there.
And for some people, coping with the challenges of every day
life is more difficult than it is for others...
For the "others,"
help is readily available. Because of their economic
situation, education, culture, and social integration into
their communities, they have access to support and
counseling services. Unfortunately, for tens of
thousands of people in the Milwaukee area this is not the
case. For many of these people, The Counseling Center
of Milwaukee (TCCM), which offers comprehensive mental
health services to people desperately in need of them, is
the only option.
Counseling & Group Services
Counseling Services
Those seeking
counseling are often dealing with issues such as the
emotional trauma of failed or troubled relationships, a
crippling lack of self-esteem or confidence, deep and
ongoing depression, or insufficient coping mechanisms.
Other clients are seriously and persistently mentally ill
and in the midst of a crisis. Many are also low-income
and unemployed. Often, they have trouble accessing and
identifying mental health and support services. Their
emotional challenges play out at home, at work,
and in the community.
TCCM makes a
difference in their lives through out-patient short and long-term individual, couples, and family therapy.
Group Services
Often, a solution to
personal mental health issues comes in the form of support
and therapy groups. Within these group settings men
and women meet separately, or together when appropriate.
There they learn to communicate effectively and deal with
problems such as fears and difficulties relating to others,
low self-esteem, and life transitions including changes and
losses. These groups typically meet for eight to ten
weeks.
Groups are organized
around mutually agreed upon topics. Recent general
groups addressed depression, self-esteem, single living,
disabilities, and relationship issues. Other groups
were for survivors - men and women who experienced sexual
abuse or assaults as children or adults. Another group
counseled parents of children sexually abused or assaulted.
TCCM groups also
support those who face issues related to sexual orientation
and identity. TCCM's offerings to lesbian, gay,
bisexual and questioning (LGBQ) community reflect our
commitment to those who are unable to find community healing
elsewhere.
Information and
Referral
Annually, TCCM
responds to more than 15,000 calls from people seeking
information on mental health issues or referrals to
resources that will assist them in dealing with mental
health-related issues or concerns.
